A reading + writing workshop
embracing the margins
For the past year, I’ve been teaching creative writing at Habilitat, the substance abuse treatment center in Kaneohe. On Sundays, I walk up the road carting a bag full of books and pens and notebooks and spend a few hours immersed in conversation and lessons about writing. I think of it as church.
After almost a year of writing class, we’re doing our first public reading and combining it with a writing workshop.
We’ll take you through the kind of session we share in class. Writing can be hard and lonely, but we use interactive exercises that get your hand moving. We’ll spend some time discussing a poem or short piece of prose before we do a group activity and then dive into some writing. After that, the women from my class will read from pieces they’ve been working on. And since this is Hawaiʻi, weʻll have pupus.
